The Medersa
of ben Youssef is one of the most spectacular monuments of Marrakech. The
current structure of this Koranic school was built around 1570 by the Saadian
and restored in 1950. At the time of its splendor, the Ben Youssef Madrasa
could accommodate up to 900 students in 150 cells that make up the building.
This architectural feature makes this sacred building the largest madrasas
across the Maghreb.
This
masterpiece of sacred architecture in the Medina of Marrakech, surprise anyone
by some of its audacity. The architect has swept some of Arab-Andalusian
tradition, by setting up openings of certain cell on the streets of the Medina.
He also arranged some windows in the cells facing one of the small courtyards. The
Madrasa of Ben Youssef also fascinates visitors by its craft and decorative
richness implemented in developing stucco walls and cedar decor.
